OPTIMUM SETUP for BOCA 14.4KBPS INTERNAL MODEM UNDER QmodemPro for Windows
==========================================================================
INTRODUCTION
------------
Most of you out there who wanted a 14.4k modem didn't want to spend too much
money on one. Some of you, like me, bought Boca's model, right? And you
slapped it in the machine, clicketied into QmodemPro for Windows, did the
quick config, and the modem either returned nothing at all, or displayed:
ERROR
Nothing more. Not:
ERROR: YOU SHOULD TYPE AT$G&F3*73S0=128%C1 INSTEAD
Just plain:
ERROR
Modems have a tendency to be cryptic at times. You spent hours, changing
initialization strings, fixing port settings, opening and closing the CPU
cover. And the same thing:
ERROR
Now what do you do?
RESTORING FACTORY DEFAULTS
--------------------------
IF you can get this little bugger of a modem into terminal mode, type:
AT&F&W
and press enter. This restores the default settings for the modem. It
also writes them to non-volatile memory. It should return:
OK
IT WILL! (you hope) If not, call Boca.
OPTIMAL INITIALIZATION STRINGS
------------------------------
After typing the AT&F&W, use the following command to initialize the modem
into a workable condidtion.
AT &F L3 V1 W2 X4 &W ^M
This sets it up pretty well. The &F restores the factory defaults, in case
the modem gremlins come in in the middle of the night and change the set-
tings. The L3 makes it so you can hear the modem, due to the tiny, wussy
speaker they put on it. (What say we propose surround-sound modems? ;-) The
V1 sets normal result codes, the X4 makes it so the modem tells you just ex-
actly why you can't connect to Da Warren BBS & Grill (805-854-2478 shameless
plug) at more than 75bps. The W2 also does that, but so it reports MNP and
v.42bis status. Finally, &W writes the settings to NRAM so that even if mod-
em gremlins don't come with their magic init strings, the settings will be
there tomorrow morning.
USE WITH QmodemPro for Windows
------------------------------
Well, you stopped reading the file, right? And you went out into QmodemLand
and punched in all the cute little commands. And you called up your fav-
orite BBS, downloaded a file, and looked and saw only 28% efficiency. YOUR
HAIR STOOD ON END! You wonder why you didn't just buy a 2400. The problem
is with QmodemPro and the Modem. When the modem is using error correction,
it reports CONNECT 57600/ARQ to Qmodem. Qmodem thinks you are flying through
hyperspace on the Boca 57.6 v.92bis modem. You are only connected at 14,400
bps, though. That 28% is actually 112%. Wanna fix it? Be sure you are
using the super init string above. Under Options/Device, click Modem. Change
the "Connect" message to CARRIER. Now, the actual data speed will be used,
rather than the speed that the COM port is locked at. You will be able to
download files at 112% efficiency, now.
